Bordering devices for flanging brake lines
Flanging devices are always used on vehicles when sheet metal parts - such as wheel arches or brake lines - have to be bent. This activity can be carried out for various reasons, for example with wide tyres. The term itself comes from the metalworking industry. It is used to describe the upsetting and bending of sheet metal or pipes at the edges.
Where is flanging used?
flanging on the wheel arches
In the automotive sector, flanging is often used to machine the wheel arches and wheel arches after lowering a vehicle and to make them freer. The situation is similar with the use of wide tires and corresponding wheels. Flanging is often unavoidable here as well. In this case, the sheet edge on the wheel arches is compressed inwards using a special flanging device for fenders. This creates more space between the tyre and the sheet metal of the wheel arch: the tyres have more room to move and cannot come into contact with the sheet metal.
Replace brake and hydraulic lines using a flaring device
The wheel arches are not the only place where flanging devices are used. If brake and hydraulic lines have to be processed, these devices are also of great help. The same applies to:
- Steel pipes.
- aluminium lines,
- brass wires and
- Copper lines.
Corrosion and environmental influences can be causes for damage to the brake lines. For this reason it is necessary to replace them early. The TÜV often draws the attention of the vehicle owner to a damaged brake line. Sometimes only part of the brake line is defective, so that it only needs to be partially replaced. In this case, only the defective part of the brake line is replaced and connected to the intact part of the old brake line with the aid of a brake line connector.
In order to replace or insert a brake line connector, flanging is usually used. This means: The edge at the end of the brake line is bent over so that the union nut of the brake line connector can be screwed tightly to the brake line.
To flange a brake line correctly is not that easy. In any case a brake line flaring device should be used. With this device the flanging is very comfortable, but should still be done by a car expert, because you can do some things wrong here as well.
Branding devices for brake lines in detail
Optically, the flanging device looks like a vice. Depending on the size of the brake and hydraulic lines, different clamping jaw attachments are required. These are naturally included in the scope of delivery.
And here's how it works: The brake line is pushed into the jaws of the flaring device and tightened. It is important to make sure that the line is really tight. There is a pressure piece on the other side. This is used to exert pressure on the edges at the end of the brake line so that they are compressed and bent over. This is done by turning a toggle, which pushes the pressure piece further and further against the line. In a hydraulic flaring device, this process takes place with the help of a hydraulic drive.
The effect of pressure on the line causes a bulge to form, which stands outwards at the end of the brake line. This funnel-shaped bead ensures that the screw connection of the brake line connector is firmly seated and that the line cannot move.
.Attention: A brake line should never be replaced by a layman alone, but always be carried out by a specialist or under the supervision of a specialist!
outside flanging and inside flanging
The brake line flanging just described is called outer flanging, as the bead created by flanging is compressed outwards. There is also the inner flanging: Here the edges of the metal part to be processed are bent or upset inwards.
