Welding protection: Important especially for the eyes!

During welding work, intensive UV light is produced. In addition, particles such as sparks or welding splashes can be produced, which can damage eyes and skin. It is therefore absolutely essential to ensure adequate protection when welding, especially for the eyes, but also for the entire body, so that literally "nothing gets in the eye".

The type of protection during welding depends, on the one hand, on the frequency with which a person carries out welding work and, on the other hand, on the type of welding and the associated risks. For example, if weld spatter occurs during welding, greater protection must be provided than if this is not the case. Welding spatter is caused, among other things, when heat and pressure from the metal to be welded causes small particles to be detached from the surface, which then fly around as molten metal.

In such a case the welding protection must cover the entire body. A welding helmet must be used in any case. The protection may be less if welding is occasionally carried out without spattering.

UV radiation can damage the eye

Mechanical effects on the eye can damage it as well as invisible UV radiation.

In this context, short-wave UVB radiation is particularly damaging to the eye. Welding without appropriate welding protection can cause irreparable damage to the eye. UVB radiation destroys, for example, the tear layer of the eye, which is responsible for the refraction of light in the eye. It also damages the cells of the upper corneal layer. This damage usually regenerates, but frequent exposure can cause irreversible corneal degeneration. It can also cause cataracts or promote their development. It is therefore absolutely essential to wear appropriate safety goggles or, preferably, a welding helmet with UV filtering when welding.

Welding helmets not only protect the eyes, but also, in contrast to safety goggles, the entire head against the particles flying around during welding.

Welding helmets from RP-TOOLS - the right choice for car workshops, industry or hobby welders

Welding helmets are fireproof. Our automatic welding helmets from our own production are also solar powered and have an automatic darkening function. They are suitable for all common welding operations such as electrode, MIG-MAG, oxyfuel and TIG welding.

For the benefit of your health when welding, always pay attention to the prescribed ventilation and all other necessary safety measures.
